Model United Nations Gathers at the Üsküdar american Academy 

 

474 young delegates from 47 schools in 11 countries will discuss world issues at UAA from 27- 30 November 2014.

 

This year, the keynote speaker is Karabekir Akkoyunlu. Karabekir Akkoyunlu is Assistant Professor of Southeast Europe and Modern Turkey at the University of Graz, Austria. He recently completed a PhD in comparative politics at the London School of Economics, where his research focused on political and institutional change in Turkey and Iran on the basis of a proposed redefinition of hybrid regimes. At the LSE, he taught courses on Middle East politics and theories of democracy and democratisation. In 2011 - 2012, he was a research associate at the Southeast European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX). Prior to his academic career, he worked as a political analyst in London and as an English teacher in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He has published extensively on Turkish politics, society and foreign affairs and has been a frequent contributor to forums such as Open Democracy, Al Monitor, Oxford Analytica and CNN International. He is an Uskudar American Academy alumnus (Class of 2001), and holds a B.A. in History from Brown University and M.Phil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge.

 

UAA, which is the first school that has organized an MUN Conference in Turkey, will host the conference for the 21st time this year. The guest schools are from Egypt, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Italy, Norway, France, and Saudi Arabia. This year too, we hope that our conference provides a platform where world matters are discussed and effective soultions are suggested. The theme of the conference is “The Power of the Few”. The topics of discussion include the illegal arms trade in South Sudan, Somali issue, access to clean water and health issues in Africa, and the political instability in Ukraine.
